The purpose of the K9 program is to assist the patrol officers with routine calls, in addition to searches. The combination of the K9s special training and their extraordinary sense of smell aids the officers in finding a person who is hiding from the police. The K9 program is part of the Operations Division. It is a specialized assignment and the Officers and their partners are assigned to Patrol Shifts.

To develop a trusting relationship and to learn specialized police patrol techniques the officer and his dog first attend a four-week training school together. Upon their graduation the two begin to "work the streets" as partners.

The K9 program is credited with saving countless work hours for the officers and making their work environment and our community safer.
