A section of the Operations Division, the Traffic/Special Operations Unit is comprised of officers sharing several duties. They handle the day-to-day crash investigations and calls for traffic service, which includes speeding, parking, traffic flow and other related complaints.
The unit also assists in tracking enforcement data and dealing with direct complaints from residents. Directed patrols are sometimes set up to help with resident complaints, most commonly for speeding. These last for 10 to 14 days at a time and involve the use of radar trailers and laser speed measuring guns to slow drivers.
Most of the officers in this unit are certified Crash Reconstructionists and the remainder are in the process of becoming certified. This is a requirement of the Traffic Unit, as well as attending specific and detailed training on motorcycles, DWI investigation and DWI crash investigation.
