Written by Dale Wasserman and based on the classic novel by Ken Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is set in a psychiatric hospital in the early 1960’s. Unfolding through the eyes of a towering Native American man named Chief Bromden who cannot hear or speak, the story begins on the day a new patient enters the hospital, Randle P. McMurphy, a larger-than-life gambler who faked psychosis to avoid the drudgery of the work farm. The patients he encounters on the psychiatric ward live a life of banal routine, their existence ruled by the tyrannical Nurse Ratched and the looming threat of the “Shock-Shop”. As McMurphy comes to know the men, he risks his life and freedom showing them how to stand up for themselves. The play won the 2001 Tony® Award for an Outstanding Revival of a Play and the Outer Critics Circle Award for an Outstanding Revival of a Play. The New York Post reported,” Cuckoo is captivating,” and The New York Times called it “Scarifying and powerful.”
