O’Fallon seeking volunteers for annual “King Day of Service”

Although City Hall will be closed for business in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 21, volunteers of all ages are invited to register in advance to participate in community service projects from 9 a.m. – noon.

“We encourage those who are available Monday morning to join us for the King Day of Service,” said Alexis Jaegers, O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services Coordinator. “Volunteers will make tissue paper and origami flowers and decorate cards that will be distributed to residents at local care facilities on Random Acts of Kindness Day, February 14.”

Free holiday fun at O’Fallon’s festive Tree Lighting Ceremony

Ring in the official start of the holiday season at O’Fallon’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, which will be held from 6–8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall), 100 North Main Street, O’Fallon, Missouri 63366. Admission, family activities and visits with Santa are free. Concessions and other items will be available for purchase.

The ceremony kicks off with families joining O’Fallon’s Mayor, Bill Hennessy, in counting down to the illumination of a huge Christmas tree in the City Hall Rotunda, followed by cheering the arrival of Santa. The evening’s festivities include live choral music, holiday games and crafts, visits with Santa and other holiday characters (be sure to bring your camera!), and City Train rides (weather permitting). Vendors will sell holiday decorations, crafts and gifts.

Theater tickets available for the drama, Steel Magnolias

Tickets for the O’FallonTheatreWorks’ (OTW) production of the drama, Steel Magnolias, will be available starting Monday, October 29. The award-winning play will be performed in the auditorium-theater at O’Fallon’s Municipal Centre (City Hall), 100 North Main Street, O’Fallon Missouri 63366. Performances of Steel Magnolias will be held November 30 – December 2, and December 7-9. The curtain goes up at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Written by Robert Harling, Steel Magnolias is laced with repartee delivered by women whose inner strength, deep bond for one another, and willingness to poke fun makes them marvelous company in good times and bad.

Healthy Living Story Writing Contest for elementary school-aged students

Kids, can you think of a good story about healthy living that would encourage people? If you are an elementary-school-aged kid (K-5th grade) give it a try. Just let your imagination run wild and create an interesting character and exciting original story. Or, base your story on your own personal experiences and write about fitness, eating well, making safe choices, protecting the environment, or any other health-related topic.

The winner of the story will be contacted by Friday, December 7, and the winning story will be announced in January 2013. The story also will be developed into a live performance by Monkey Tales Theatre, and the show will debut at the Renaud Spirit Center’s RSC 5K Fitness Festival on May 4, 2013.

O’Fallon hosting Economic Development Strategic Plan Kickoff Meeting

The public is invited to attend the City of O’Fallon, Missouri’s Economic Development Strategic Plan Kickoff Meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30. The event will be held in the City Council Chambers at O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall), 100 North Main Street, O’Fallon, MO 63366. The facilitator will be the City’s Economic Development Director, Mike Hurlbert.

The purpose of this project is to develop an Economic Development Strategic Plan for the City which will lay out the steps and action items necessary to both encourage and accommodate investment by the public and private sectors and thereby enhance the overall quality of life. The Plan will accomplish this through the strengthening of four major tenants: business retention, business recruitment, community marketing, and regulatory climate.

Carved Pumpkin Exhibit includes demonstration

Carved pumpkin masterpieces to be exhibited

On Sunday, October 21, visit the historic Heald Home in Fort Zumwalt Park to see an exhibit of intricately carved pumpkin masterpieces created by artist Marion Nichols. Nichols, who is also known as the Snowflake Lady at the St. Louis City Museum downtown, will be on hand to demonstrate her art, and her carved pumpkins will be displayed throughout the house. The event, which is for all ages, will be held from 1 – 4 p.m. The cost is $2 at the door, and includes a tour of the house.

O’Fallon’s popular fall festival is coming up on October 12-13, with free admission and parking both dates. On Friday, go dancing to the greatest hits in rock ‘n roll from 5 – 10 p.m. at O’Fallon’s Fall Fest Street Dance. Then, return for the Fall Fest in Civic Park on Saturday, October 13, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. for shopping at specialty booths, more great music, family-friendly entertainment and free kids’ activities.

O’Fallon’s “Haunted Park Hunt” offers a frightfully fun Friday night for adults

All you need is a flashlight to enjoy O’Fallon’s exciting “Haunted Park Hunt,” a Friday night scavenger hunt for adults (ages 21+) from 7 – 10 p.m. on October 19 in Dames Park, O’Fallon MO 63366. This fast-paced event in O’Fallon’s most haunted park is popular with couples, co-workers and friends, with two-person teams competing to be the first in deciphering clues. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams that tally the most points.

O'Fallon's Pumpkin Picnic is a treat

O’Fallon’s Pumpkin Picnic includes a hayride, storytelling

Parents and grandparents are invited to register kids ages 2 – 12 for the Pumpkin Picnic, which will be held from 4 – 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, in Fort Zumwalt Park. Kids should dress up or wear a fall costume to the picnic, where they can pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, go on a hayride, listen to spooky storytelling and munch on a hotdog and treats. Parents, don’t forget your camera! The cost is $10 for O’Fallon residents and $12 for non-residents. The deadline to register for the picnic is Monday, October 15. (Please sign up as soon as possible; no registration will be available at the gate.)
