Holiday Break Camp offers fun for kids, peace of mind for parents

Parents who enroll children ages 5 – 12 in O’Fallon’s “Holiday Break Camp” can enjoy peace of mind knowing that their kids are safe, having fun and getting exercise, too. For their part, kids can have a great time finding new friends, playing games, making crafts and enjoying other activities. Camps meet from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily in the Renaud Spirit Center, the City’s indoor recreation complex. Campers need to bring a sack lunch each day; no refrigeration is available. Two sessions are available:

  • Thursday and Friday, December 26-27; the cost is $28 for O’Fallon residents and $32 for non-residents.
  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, December 30-31 and January 2-3 (no camp on Wednesday, January 1); the cost is $56 for O’Fallon residents and $63 for non-residents.

Parents and guardians must register campers in person no later than December 16. Registration can be taken at the Renaud Spirit Center (RSC), 2650 Tri Sports Circle (63368), or the Parks and Recreation Administration Office, 400 Civic Park Drive (63366). Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 458 to exhibit soldiers’ field equipment, memorabilia

Get ready for Veterans’ Day by stepping into the historic Heald Home (circa 1884) from 1 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, and chatting with Vietnam-era veterans about the exhibit of military uniforms, a field radio, C-rations, weapons, ammunition and memorabilia that will be on display for the afternoon. The weapons and ammunition are inert and cannot be fired.

“This is a hands-on display,” said Sheldon Hartsfield, spokesperson for VVA Chapter 458. “People will be able to pick the items up and even put on a helmet and field gear and see for themselves how much weight we used to carry running through the jungle.”

Fort Zumwalt Park temporarily closing to vehicles

Beginning Monday, October 14, Fort Zumwalt Park in O’Fallon, Missouri, will officially close to vehicles so that crews can safely install holiday lights and scenes for the City’s annual Celebration of Lights display. The park will remain open to pedestrians who want to use the asphalt walking and jogging path through the park during daylight hours. Located on Jessup Drive (off Veterans Memorial Parkway), the park will reopen to traffic on January 20, 2014.

The public is invited to drive through the Celebration of Lights display, which opens at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 29 (the day after Thanksgiving), continuing nightly through December 30, except for Wednesday, December 25, when it will be closed for Christmas. The event, which is sponsored by the City of O’Fallon with help from local businesses, helps raise funds for participating not-for-profit organizations.

O’Fallon’s “Making a Difference” Blood Drive

Can you help save a life or three? If you are at least 17 years old and healthy, please donate blood on Friday, October 18, between 11a.m. and 3 p.m. at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall), 100 North Main Street, O’Fallon, Missouri 63366. O’Fallon’s “Making a Difference Blood Drive” will collect donations of whole blood and double-red blood cells.

“Taking a few minutes to donate whole blood can help as many as three people survive a life-threatening trauma or health condition,” said Kathy Halstead, Manager of Volunteer Services. “Double-red cell donations are especially important to surgical patients and those with cancer or chronic blood disorders.”

Zombies take center stage in O’FallonTheatreWorks’ original production, Please Remain Calm

Question: What do you do with a young child who’s been bitten by a zombie? Answer: If you are the Greenwood family, you lock her in the coat closet.

Please Remain Calm, an original play written by O’Fallon author Carole Lanham for O’FallonTheatreWorks, will be performed at 7 p.m. on October 25-27 and November 1-3 at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall), 100 North Main Street, O’Fallon, Missouri 63366.

O’Fallon’s Pumpkin Picnic is a treat for all ages

The whole family is invited to register for the Pumpkin Picnic, which will be held from 4 – 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, in Fort Zumwalt Park. Kids, especially, love to dress up in their favorite costume and pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, go on a hayride, listen to spooky storytelling and munch on a hotdog and other treats. The cost is $10 per person for O’Fallon residents and $12 for non-residents. Parents and grandparents, don’t forget your camera! The deadline to register for the picnic is Monday, October 14. Please sign up as soon as possible. Sorry, no registration will be taken at the gate.

For fiendishly good Friday night fun, sign up for O’Fallon’s “Haunted Park Hunt” for adults

Scare up a freaky Friday night of fun by registering for the “Haunted Park Hunt” for ages 21+. Perfect for couples and friends, the spooky scavenger hunt will be held from 7 – 10 p.m. on October 18 in Dames Park, O’Fallon Missouri 63366. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams finding and deciphering clues and tallying the most points. Be sure to bring a flashlight!

O’Fallon’s Civic Dance Studio for kids and teens now includes private lessons

Looking for a fun, year around program that keeps kids on their toes? Civic Dance Studio, offered by O’Fallon’s Parks and Recreation Department, provides tap, ballet, acrobatics, jazz dancing, contemporary and more. Beginning classes include tap, ballet and acrobatics for ages 3 and up, with more advanced classes in ballet, pointe, lyrical and jazz for pre-teens and teenagers. Classes are held at the Civic Annex, 410 East Elm Street near downtown O’Fallon.

In addition to private lessons, Civic Dance offers an eleven-month program that concludes with a dance recital, encouraging students to practice and master the skills they need. Classes are offered in eight-week sessions, with the next session beginning September 9. Students can join the program at any time until January 2014, and still be eligible to appear in the dance recital. Test your fitness level by competing in O’Fallon’s 11th Annual Alligator’s Creek Triathlon

If you enjoy a challenge and like to swim, bike and run, sign up for O’Fallon, Missouri’s 11th Annual Alligator’s Creek Triathlon, which will be held from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 11. The race begins at Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center, 403 Civic Park Drive, O’Fallon 63366, with a 300-yard serpentine swim, followed by an 18.6-mile bike ride and a 5K run through City streets. Awards will be given to the top three overall winners and in age-group divisions.

The cost to register through Thursday, July 18, is $49 for individuals and $88 for teams. The field is limited to 300 participants. A $10 late fee will be added to the registration fee from July 19 through August 1, the deadline to register for the event. T-shirts are not guaranteed to late registrants.
