Street Creep Request

The thermo expansion and contraction of concrete pavements, otherwise known as “street creep,” is an occurrence that affects many communities.

Cured concrete expands and contracts due to temperature changes throughout the year. Homes located at the end of “T” intersections, at the end of cul-de-sacs, and on the outside of a curve are especially susceptible to “street creep” damage.

To help eliminate this problem with future residential construction, the City of O’Fallon now requires that driveways constructed in areas prone to “street creep” to have a four-inch expansion joint at the back of curb, a one-inch expansion joint at the back of sidewalk or near the property line and a two-inch expansion joint adjacent to the garage floor.

Although residential driveways are private property, and maintenance and repair of the driveway is the sole responsibility of the homeowner, as a courtesy to O’Fallon residents, the City offers repair services to those with possible “street creep” damage. The service entails:

  • Making a saw cut across the driveway approximately six inches from the back of the existing curb line
  • Removal of the existing concrete
  • Re-fill of the gap with a hot mix asphalt

This creates a six-inch contraction joint that is less likely to bridge forces. The City will also fill in any gap caused by a street that is pulling away from the driveway during an occurrence of “street creep.”

To request this service, homeowners are asked to complete the request form below, or contact the Street Division directly at (636) 379-3808 or (636) 379-3807.
