Free home emergency and disaster preparedness training available through O’Fallon’s CERT class

Learn emergency and disaster preparedness skills, free at the O’Fallon Police Department’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program on September 22, 23 and 24. The course includes hands-on training in these topics, and more:

  • Assembling a disaster preparedness kit for home and car
  • Hands-on basic head-to-toe medical assessment, simple triage and rapid treatment techniques for airway obstruction, bleeding, shock, and basic first aid for injuries, burns, etc.
  • Learning when and how to shut off utilities at home
  • Working as a team to safely to conduct triage, light search and rescue, sizing up and extinguishing small fires, maintaining rescuer safety
  • Communicating effectively with public safety organizations during a disaster

The course is designed for individuals, couples, neighborhood association members, faith-based groups, businesses and employees, law enforcement candidates and those with medical training.

O’Fallon’s candlelight POW/MIA Ceremony recognizes American military personnel who remain missing in the field

On Friday, September 15, at 7 p.m., O’Fallon’s annual POW/MIA Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held on behalf of the 82,500 American troops from foreign wars who remain as prisoners of war or unaccounted for, and the families who are waiting for their return. The ceremony will be held at O’Fallon Veterans Memorial Walk, 800 Veterans Memorial Parkway, O’Fallon, Missouri 63366.

Welcoming remarks will be delivered by O’Fallon Mayor Bill Hennessy, and the keynote speaker will be Kaitlyn Bross, a senior at St. Dominic High School. The ceremony is hosted by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 458 and Am Vets Post 106, and includes posting of the colors, dressing of the table, candle lighting, the laying of the wreath, a rifle salute and "Taps." Music will be provided by the Living Word Christian School Band.

Non-profits are invited to create unique holiday scenes for O’Fallon’s popular Celebration of Lights display

If your non-profit group or business is looking for an enjoyable fundraiser, the City of O’Fallon has openings for organizations to create unique holiday scenes as part of the annual Celebration of Lights display in Fort Zumwalt Park. The event opens Friday, November 24 (the day after Thanksgiving) at 6 p.m. and continues nightly (except on Christmas, December 25) through Saturday, December 30.

To participate, organizations must be 501c3 tax exempt, willing to create and maintain a unique, hand-crafted Christmas-themed exhibit at the Celebration of Lights display and help staff the gates 2-3 nights during the event. Participating groups also must have representatives present at the Old-Fashioned Holiday Stroll for pedestrians on December 11 and 12.

Bring your dog to Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center for the Pool Paws Dog Swim on September 9

Party with your dog and socialize with other dog owners at the “Pool Paws Dog Swim” on Saturday, September 9, at Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center, 403 Civic Park Drive (in Civic Park), O’Fallon, Missouri 63366. The event, which will be held from 9:30 –11:30 a.m., features raffles, games and prizes, and every dog gets a chance to win an attendance prize. Dogs will have a great time playing with the water spouts on the beach and paddling in the pool. Humans will not be swimming with their pets but they are welcome to wade up to their knees in the leisure pool.

The cost is $10 per dog, which includes one human and $3 for each additional person. Funds benefit the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation. Dogs must be accompanied by an adult (age 18 or older) and have written proof of rabies vaccination.
